Cultural norms
Goa is by far the most westernised part of India . Unlike other parts of India you will see more women wear western cloths here. However it is advised to dress appropriately while visiting Goa. Nudism is illegal however you will find some of it at the beaches specially the secluded beaches like Arambol. Remove your footwear while entering hindu temples.
Drugs
Drugs are illegal and you will be in deep trouble if you are caught with any drugs on you. Even though it is easily available through drug peddlers on almost all beaches please stay away from the trouble.Punishment can range from hefty fine to a long time in jail.

Foreign exchange
There is a limit on the cash you can carry into India . You are advised to carry a small amount with you for both legal as well as safety reasons. The best option is to carry travellers cheques. There are many places you can exchange foreign currency and TCs .However State Bank of India always gives the best exchange rate.
Language
English is widely spoken in Goa . Some of the older folks also know Portuguese. Konkani is the local language and Hindi is also widely spoken.
Money and Banks
The local currency is Indian Rupees (INR).Exchange rate is about Rs. 40 per USD.
Banks are normally open between 10 a .m. to 2 a .m. Monday to Friday. ATMs are everywhere.
Newspapers
It is difficult to get any foreign newspaper in Goa . Leading national dailies include Times of India and Indian Express.
Local English dailies include The Navhind Times and Oheraldo.
Security
Though Goa is one of the safest places in India there have been some reports of robbery and assault against women. It is safe not to travel alone late at nights and also to keep your belongings secured safely in your hotel rooms when you leave the room.

Smoking is banned in public areas however you will notice that the implementaion of the ban is rather lax.
